USMLE What You Need To Know

The United States Medical Licensing Exam, or USMLE, is one of the most difficult, rigorous exams used for any kind of licensing in the country. Divided into three separate steps, the USMLE exam assesses a medical student's or graduate's ability to apply science concepts when practicing medicine, apply medical knowledge to patient care under supervision, and to understand and employ knowledge of biomedical and clinical science in practice without supervision. Test takers will need to by able ot identify gross and microscopic pathologic and normal specimens. Test questions in this section of the USMLE will be recognized as related to either general principles of organ systems or individual organ systems.

Step 2 of the USMLE is referred to as Clinical Knowledge assessment and also consists of multiple choice questions. In this section, some situations presented will have multiple questions following that are to be answered based on the same information. However, each question will still have only one correct answer. Normal Conditions and Diseases make up the major part of Step 2, dealing with basic concepts, general principles, and normal growth and development processes. Individual disorders are covered and divided by Physician Task, including:

• Promoting Preventive Medicine and Health Maintenance (assessing risk factors, epidemiologic data, and use of primary and secondary preventive measures)
• Understanding Mechanisms of Disease (pathophysiology and etiology, as well as effects of various treatment modes)
• Establishing a Diagnosis (interpretation of findings including review of patient history, lab work, imaging, and other diagnostic measures)
• Applying Principles of Management (care of chronic and acute patient conditions for in- and outpatient care)

• Ambulatory patient encounters (as well as a brief overview of inpatient care)
• Incorporation of applied basic science concepts (justification for prognosis, patient management, and use of fundamentals learned in other sections of the test)
• Handling of test items and cases (action related challenges requiring judgment and clinic decisions)

In order to pass the exams, each must receive a 3-digit score of 187, 182, and 184 respectively for Steps 1, 2, and 3 of the exam out of a possible 260 on the scaled scoring system. This is equivalent to somewhere between 60-70%.
