What is Praxis?

So what types of things are on the test? What types of questions will you have to answer? There are actually four different sections that you will need to study and prepare for.

The Praxis I, also called the Pre-Professional Skill Assessment, is used to evaluate someone looking to enter the teaching field. It is developed by the Educational Testing Service and it measures your basic skills in math, reading and writing. When your test is completed, you will receive a mailed copy of the test results. Copies will also be sent to any institutions or organizations that wanted you to have the test. There is a reading section on the test that will have 40 multiple choice questions for you to answer. You will have 1 hour to do so. Next is a writing section of the Praxis test which you have 45 minutes to complete and there are 38 multiple choice questions to answer as well as an essay question. The questions are from the following content areas: grammatical relationships (13%); structural relationships (18.5%); and idiom/word choice and mechanics (18.5%). The other half of the test is a short essay assignment. Next is the math section which has 40 questions and needs to be completed within an hour. The questions are in the following content areas: conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge (45%); representations of quantitative information (30%); and measurement, informal geometry, and formal mathematical reasoning (25%). You will not be allowed to use a calculator during the exam. You will get a score for your Praxis no matter how many questions you answer. Unfinished answers are not counted as wrong. You are only scored on the number of questions that you complete and your raw score will be factored according to this. The Praxis is usually taken online although there are paper versions of the test available if you are unable to take it only and need an alternate option. The Praxis test is administered by Thomson Prometric at locations around the country and special arrangements can also be made for those with certain disabilities. That should help you be familiar with the sections of the test that you will have to face. Remember also that it is important to get a good night's rest and a healthy meal the day before. If you get nervous while test-taking, you might want to have a light breakfast on the test day but don't skip eating or you may get sick and you also won't have the energy needed to take the test.
