The CAHSEE and information on the CAHSEE practice test

The Importance Of The CAHSEE

The California High School Exit Exam, abbreviated as CAHSEE, is a newly implemented test required by the state of California for all students graduating high school, beginning with the Class of 2006. In order to receive their high school diploma, students must pass the CAHSEE test, which evaluates the ability to read, write, and evaluate mathematical equations. The exam was created by the California Department of Education to help determine how efficient the California school system is and make sure that students entering college or the workforce have the necessary skills to function properly.

The first class to be required to take the test in 2006 showed excellent CAHSEE test results, with about a 90% passing rate. However, the goal is to further improve these results. This can be done with concentrated CAHSEE preparation, as well as administering a CAHSEE exit exam practice test midyear to evaluate areas where students need further assistance in grasping basic concepts.

The CAHSEE only pertains to public schools in the state of California, and regardless of any other academic achievements and graduation requirements. In other words, if a student receives a 4.0 grade point average but fails the CAHSEE test, that student is ineligible to graduate and receive a diploma.

CAHSEE test questions are divided into two main sections, one regarding English-language arts (ELA) and the other mathematics. Each section is graded with a scale out of 450 possible points. The CAHSEE questions in the English portion consist of 72 multiple choice questions related to grammar, reading comprehension, spelling and punctuation, and vocabulary. This portion of the test also includes a prompt to which student must respond with a 2 ? page essay, usually either supporting a point or describing an event or activity. The English portion of the exam tests on a 10th grade level and requires a 60% passing score.

For the math portion, students will answer 80 multiple choice questions that are based on an 8th grade comprehension level and must receive a 55% passing score. Tests are administered beginning in the sophomore year of high school, and students are given six opportunities to take the exam (once every semester). Should a student fail one or both portions of the test, they simply need to retake the exam at a later date and achieve a passing score.

Students have access to CAHSEE released questions and CAHSEE practice tests throughout their time in school, and much of the classroom work is dedicated to developing the basic skills needed to achieve a passing score on the exam. Unlike entrance exams to private schools and colleges, the CAHSEE exam standards are set at a level deemed as a minimum requirement to function in society upon graduation. The California Board of Education and supporting legislators agree that, without being at least competent enough to pass this basic skills exam, students have not prepared themselves to hold jobs, pay bills, or support themselves in a normal fashion outside of the school system.

For students who feel they need additional study materials, free practice CAHSEE math question collections can be found on many websites, and CAHSEE online practice exams are available for free as well as in quantities for a price. To get CAHSEE online practice tests free, a student or teacher wishing to assess his or her students' competency level need only conduct a brief internet search and download materials, including answer keys.

The California school system has even restructured some of its teaching methods to center its focus on the CAHSEE course outline, which helps to assure that students exiting the school system can communicate and work with financial needs with the skills achieved. However, one major issue that comes up is that, by choosing this teaching method, less emphasis is places on other skills, such as basic science, history, and social skills that also help individuals function in society.

Other controversy has arisen since the first administration of the exam for graduates of the 2006 class. While nine out of ten students in California overall passed the exam, when looking down the line at racial divisions, results were worse for black and Hispanic students, leading a fueled debate that the tests were racist and being used to hold back the minorities. Also, students still learning English received the worst feedback, with one in four failing. The exam has, however, been cleared as indiscriminate of race, sex, and religion, and it seems that the new debate is centered around the quality of school systems in California where large communities of African Americans and Hispanics reside. For example, the overall test results in Los Angeles raised such an issue that the superintendent made a promise to anyone who failed and would retake the exam in the summer that they would be allowed to at least participate in graduation ceremonies.

A sample CAHSEE math question is shown below in order to help readers determine if it is necessary to attempt to take CAHSEE practice tests for free and assess one's own ability to pass when the time comes. The test is really not difficult for students who have paid attention to basic information over time in school, not had distractions from a bad neighborhood or home life, and have been given every opportunity to learn adequately through a decent school system. The test will evaluate the performance of the schools and teachers as much as that of the students, and plans will be implemented to improve the education system in California. With multiple opportunities to take the exam and plenty of study guides and assistance, with luck, there is no doubt that an overwhelming majority of students will continue to pass the CAHSEE.
