ARDMS is a Great Way to Enhance Your Career

Are you looking for a career as a sonographers or vascular technologist? These are exciting careers that provides great opportunities for anyone interested in this field. One reason is because the opportunities for these careers increase each year as new ultrasound procedures are being generated.

Sonographers and vascular technologist uses high-frequency sound waves (otherwise known as ultrasound) to help diagnose and treat many different medical conditions. It is also used to prevent many of these conditions from occurring in the first place.

If you choose this as a career you will operate very sophisticated electronic equipment. This equipment works by collecting reflecting ultrasound echoes along with Doppler signals to produce images of the different parts of the body. If you are interested in this type of career, then you may be interested in enhancing your career by taking the ARDMS exam.

What is ARDMS?

The acronym ardms stands for American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. This is an independent, nonprofit organization that was integrated in June of 1975. You will need to take and pass the exams given by this organization to enhance your career as a sonographers or vascular technologist.

This organization oversees tests along with award credentials in the following fields.

• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS). These credentials include the abdomen, breast, neurosonology, obstetrics and gynecology, and fetal echocardiography.
• Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography (RDCS). These credentials include adult, pediatric and fetal echocardiography
• Registered Physician Vascular Interpretation (RPVI)
• Registered Vascular Technology (RVT). Credential includes and noninvasive vascular technology.

ARDMS is responsible for certifying over 50,000 individuals for these exciting and rewarding careers. It is so well-known that it is the most recognized international standard when it comes to sonography credentialing. These credentials are used to document personal achievement viewed by professional standards.

Ardms has a board of directors that make the policies that govern this organization. These are the people that define the direction of the exams. This board is made up of physicians, sonographers, vascular technologist, and research scientists along with a public member.

The content of the exams are continuously evaluated by the EDTFs which is the anonym for Exam Development Task Forces. The EDTFs is made up of a similar group of people that are qualified and very knowledgeable in the subject at hand. They use an outline of the tasks used in sonography to develop the ardms registry exams questions. They also survey job functions and practices in this specialty field.

Requirements for ARDMS

The only way for a person can receive the ARDMS credential is by taking the ardms registry exams. Before you can receive the ARDMS credentials certain examination essentials are needed. One of the first requirements include making sure that you have the hands on experience needed to take the test. When you have met this requirement, then you will be given ninety days to take one of the required exams provided by the ARDMS. Of course, you can take more than one test in this length of time, but you must have at least one.

There are two types of exams that you are required to take. One of them is based on information concerning how ultrasound works based on the physical principles of the equipment. This information changes each year as new technology is put into action and you need the knowledge to be able to keep up with these changes. For the second exam you will need to be able to show that you have both the clinical and ultrasound knowledge and skills required for specific areas of expertise. These areas will include neurosonology, obstetrics/gynecology or vascular technology practices.

Of course, you will also need to have computer skills because these tests are taken on a PC. One reason that these tests are so difficult is because a lot of the questions are based on real ultrasound images. If you have not had enough hands on experience to determine the answers to the questions, then you will not be able to pass the test.

After passing two of the exams that are based on information surrounding ultrasound physics and the clinical specialty area, then you will officially become an "ARDMS certificant or registrant" whichever term you prefer to use. However, it is very important to realize that even though you have made this accomplishment you will have to continue your studies, as technology continues to grow.

It is also suggested that you take time to do as much ardms review as you can before attempting to take these test. They are so difficult that a high number of applicants do not pass the exams. The more ardms exam review you do the better chance you have of passing.

Scoring for the ARDMS Exam

On February 1st of 2007 the ARDMS examination converted to scaled scoring system. Regardless of which test form you take it is based on a scale of 300 to 700. In order to pass the test you must have a score of at least 555 or higher. This system uses the number of correct answers (which is your raw score) converted into the scale that ranges between 300 and 700.

This scoring method is used to calculate each persons score but it will not be reported as a scaled score. This type of scoring won't affect the number of people that pass or fail the ARDMS exams and the content is still the same.

The ardms exams are not required but if you have this official document, then it shows that you are truly an expert in your field. Since experienced professionals are responsible for making the requirements for these tests, if you pass them you know that you are putting all your efforts into your chosen profession.

The standards are basically the same all over the nation but it would be a good idea to check the standard for your particular state. This is because sometimes there are a few differences that may make a difference in rather you pass or fail the test. Taking the ARDMS exams is the best way to truly enhance your career.
